 Legend of the Sacred Buffalo Rock

Many years ago Indians and White man hunted and killed many Buffalo. They drove them into the High Mountains and continued to kill them until there was only one Big Bull Buffalo left alive.

He was the strongest and wisest of all Buffalo. He avoided the Humans by hiding in tall sweet grass in a high mountain valley.

There he remained but was lonesome for the company of other Buffalo. But there were no other Buffalo to find him. After may moons he became so sad that he gave up and laid down in the tall sweet grass and died.

The Great Spirit saw what had happened and turned the Great Bull Buffalo into stone as a reminder forever of the harm Humans did to the Buffalo.

It is said the the Ute Indians found this Sacred Rock and spent many winters in this high mountain valley to honer the Great Buffalo.
